Our History

We received our Charter from the Society of Decorative Painters in 1995

HISTORY

Flower City Decorative Artists was first formed in 1993 by Betsy Ogles, Lisa Cauwels, and Paula Tormey.  Over the years, we have had several meeting locations, including a community center in West Irondequoit, St. Helen's Church in Gates, A fire station on East Henrietta Road at corner of Lehigh Station Road, Messiah Lutheran Church at the corner of Mt. Read Blvd. and English Road in Greece, The Legacy at Cranberry Landing off Norton Street, to our current location at The Legacy at Erie Station.

Our community service projects have been many, and varied, from painting a wall mural at our local Ronald McDonald House, to sending care packages to troops, painting tote bags and filling them with toiletries for women in rehab facilities, painting art work and donating it to Monroe Community Hospital, Battered Women's Shelter, Daystar Daycare for fragile children, to painting vintage scenes on slate roof tiles for the Fairport Historial Museum to sell in their gift shop.

The history of our Logo:  Our young chapter had a contest to design the chapter logo.  Betty Breen designed the carousel logo. However, though it seems appropriate now, it was not based on the Dentzel Carousel in Charlotte.  At the time, the carousel at SEABREEZE Amusement Park had burned down.  She designed our logo as a tribute to the SEABREEZE carousel.  The flowers in the design are a tribute to the “flower city”, and the boat a tribute to Lake Ontario.

Separate from the logo project entirely, FCDANY participated in a large community service project many years ago with other chapters in NYS to paint panels for the EMPIRE STATE CAROUSEL.  The design that was assigned to our chapter was the First Women’s Rights convention in Seneca Falls.  A group of us, Betty Breen included, painted a very long, narrow panel and shipped it to Long Island. In 2011, the carousel was donated to The Farmer's Musuem in Cooperstown, New York.  http://www.farmersmuseum.org/farmers/on_view/carousel_and_country_fair
